Merhaba. I’m Shauna Aytan.
Food has always been my way of connecting with people and places. I’m married to a Turkish man, and together we’re raising our children bilingual in Turkish and English here in suburban New Jersey. But my journey with Turkish food and culture began long before I met my husband. I studied Turkish in college, earned a degree in Middle Eastern Languages and Literature, and spent time living and traveling throughout the region including Iran and Azerbaijan. What started as an academic pursuit turned into a lifelong love of the culture—especially the food.
These days, much of my inspiration comes from my mother-in-law, whose legendary rice and unwavering hospitality have shaped the way I think about cooking and gathering. Through her, I’ve learned that food isn’t just about what’s on the table—it’s about the warmth you extend to those around it.

I started Everyday Aegean to share that spirit of warmth, simplicity, and nourishment with you.
Turkish food, and the broader culinary traditions of the Aegean region, are deeply rooted in history and the land—built on fresh, seasonal ingredients, generous pours of olive oil, and meals meant to be shared. There’s a richness to the food culture here that’s both timeless and approachable.
My goal is to show you that bringing these flavors into your own kitchen doesn’t have to be complicated. At the heart of Everyday Aegean are simple, wholesome recipes—many inspired by Turkish traditions, others pulled from the everyday staples my family loves. Whether it’s a quick weeknight meal or a weekend project, my hope is that these recipes help you slow down, gather around the table, and savor the joy of good food.
Pull up a chair, pour some tea, and let’s bring a taste of the Aegean—and beyond—into your everyday.
